Why tags instead of collections or metafields?

Shopify product tags are the simplest, most maintainable way to categorize products for dynamic matching. Unlike collections (which require manual curation) or metafields (which require a schema setup), tags are just strings you add to a product. They're visible in the admin, editable in bulk, and readable by apps instantly.

Sleepmaxing uses tags with a sleepmaxing- prefix so they don't conflict with any other tags you already use on your products. You can have a product tagged with new-arrival, bestseller, and sleepmaxing-pillow all at once — the app only reads the ones it recognizes.

sleepmaxing-pillow

Use on: pillows, pillowcases, pillow protectors, cervical pillows, body pillows. Any product whose primary function is head or neck support during sleep.

sleepmaxing-topper

Use on: mattress toppers, mattress pads, mattress protectors. Also appropriate for weighted blankets, duvets, comforters, bed sheets, quilts, and bedding sets — anything that goes on the mattress surface.

sleepmaxing-cooling

Use on: cooling mattress pads, temperature-regulating toppers, cooling pillows, and anything specifically marketed to hot sleepers. If a product's main selling point is temperature regulation, this tag applies.

sleepmaxing-mask

Use on: sleep masks, eye masks, blackout eye masks, light-blocking sleep masks. If it goes over the eyes to block light during sleep, use this tag.

sleepmaxing-supplement

Use on: melatonin, magnesium supplements, sleep gummies, chamomile products, valerian root, ashwagandha, and any other supplement marketed for sleep improvement.

sleepmaxing-noise

Use on: white noise machines, sound machines, sleep earplugs, noise-canceling sleep earbuds, and any product designed to reduce or mask noise during sleep.

sleepmaxing-side

Use on: products specifically designed for side sleepers — contour pillows for shoulder relief, side sleeper knee pillows, body pillows for hip alignment. If your product description mentions "side sleeper" as a target user, add this tag.

sleepmaxing-back

Use on: lumbar support pillows, back sleeper pillows, rolled neck pillows, and products designed to maintain spinal alignment for back sleepers. "Back support" and "lumbar" are the key signals.

One product, multiple tags

Most products should have more than one tag. A cooling pillow designed for side sleepers should have all three: sleepmaxing-pillow, sleepmaxing-cooling, and sleepmaxing-side. This increases its chances of appearing for multiple customer profiles.

The quiz shows products that match the most tags from a customer's answers. A product with three relevant tags will outrank a product with one tag for customers whose profile matches all three. Multi-tagging is how you ensure your best-fit products surface first.

Best practice: Tag every sleep product with at least 2 tags. The quiz collects 5 data points — products with only 1 tag will rarely rank high in results.

Using the auto-tagger

Manually tagging a large catalog is tedious. The auto-tagger in Sleepmaxing does it in bulk. Here's how to use it:

1

Open the auto-tagger

From the Sleepmaxing dashboard, click Tag your products. The app fetches your full catalog and runs keyword matching against every product title and product type.

2

Review suggestions

The table shows each product, its current sleepmaxing-* tags, and the tags the auto-tagger wants to add. All rows are selected by default. Uncheck any product you want to skip.

3

Apply tags

Click Apply tags to N selected. The app calls Shopify's product API in parallel and adds the suggested tags to each product. Tags are merged with existing tags — nothing is removed.

Manual tagging in Shopify Admin

For individual products or products the auto-tagger didn't recognize, tag manually:

  1. Go to Shopify Admin → Products
  2. Click the product you want to tag
  3. Scroll to the Tags field (right sidebar)
  4. Type the tag (e.g. sleepmaxing-pillow) and press Enter
  5. Click Save

For bulk manual tagging, use Shopify's built-in bulk editor: select multiple products from the product list and use the Add tags action.

Products that show "Already tagged" in the auto-tagger

If the auto-tagger summary shows a product as "Already tagged", it means that product already has the tags the tagger would suggest — nothing for it to do. This count goes up each time you run the tagger after initial setup.

What if the auto-tagger misses a product?

The auto-tagger matches keywords in product titles and product types. If your product name doesn't include words like "pillow", "topper", "mask", etc., it won't match. This is intentional — the tagger avoids false positives.

For products with creative names (e.g. "The Cloud Nine" instead of "Memory Foam Pillow"), tag manually or update the product type in Shopify to include the category keyword.
